The Story of Matsya Avatar

The fish requested protection from larger creatures. The king kept the fish in a pot, but it kept growing bigger and bigger. Eventually, the fish revealed itself as Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu warned the king that a massive flood would soon destroy the world. He instructed Satyavrata to build a large boat and gather sages, seeds of plants, and pairs of animals to preserve life. When the flood arrived, the king and the sages boarded the boat. The Matsya avatar then appeared as a giant fish and pulled the boat safely through the dangerous waters by tying it to his horn.

During this time, Lord Vishnu also defeated a demon who had stolen the sacred Vedas and returned them to the sages. In this way, Matsya protected both life and knowledge from destruction.
